Kejetia Phase II Crisis Leaves 150 Workers Jobless

Fresh concerns have emerged over the prolonged delay of the Kejetia Phase II Market Project in Kumasi following reports that construction firm CONTRACTA has laid off about 150 workers due to the stalled nature of the project.
The affected workers, made up of engineers, technicians, artisans and labourers, are said to represent nearly two-thirds of the project’s workforce.
Sources close to the company disclosed that the decision became inevitable after months of inactivity at the construction site, with workers reportedly staying home while still receiving salaries despite the suspension of work.
According to insiders, an arrangement allegedly existed between the Government of Ghana and CONTRACTA under which government was expected to subsidize part of the workers’ salaries during the shutdown period.
However, the agreement is said not to have been fulfilled, leaving the financial burden entirely on the company.
The Kejetia Phase II Project, envisioned as a major expansion to complement the first phase of the redeveloped Kejetia Market, has remained abandoned for years, creating uncertainty for traders, workers and residents in Kumasi.
Some affected workers who spoke to Silver News Akwadaa Nyame expressed deep frustration and appealed passionately to government to release funds to resume the project.
According to them, restarting construction works would not only revive the long-delayed market project but also restore their livelihoods and provide relief to their struggling families.
“We are pleading with government to release the funds for work to continue so we can return to our jobs and take care of our families,” one worker lamented.
Others warned that the layoffs could worsen economic hardship and unemployment among many households.
“This is the only source of income for some of us. Without work, survival becomes extremely difficult,” another affected worker stated.
The latest development has intensified public concern over the future of the Kejetia Phase II Project and its growing impact on the local economy in Kumasi.
