GUNFIRE ON THE HIGHWAY: Police Ambush, Kill Three Armed Robbers, Disrupt Major Highway Heist Plot on Anwiankwanta-Obuasi Road:

    By:Justice Baffour, managing editor,www.dailywstchgh.com-0246930931

Ashanti Region, Ghana, In a daring and intelligence-driven operation, the Ashanti South Regional Police Command has struck a heavy blow against violent highway robbers, killing three suspected gunmen and seizing an arsenal of weapons tied to a planned robbery along the busy Anwiankwanta,Obuasi Highway.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, Ashanti South Regional Commander, told journalists that the dramatic operation unfolded on 24 December 2025 after police received credible intelligence about an imminent attack targeting travellers on one of the region’s most trafficked routes.

According to DCOP Nyaaba, the suspects, later identified as Seidu Issah, Musah Yakubu, and Yahaya Munkaila (alias Tijani),were lying in wait in a bushy enclave between Anwiankwanta and the Jacobu junction, preparing to ambush unsuspecting road users when law enforcement closed in.

Police moved swiftly to intercept the gang, but officers were met with heavy gunfire from the entrenched suspects. In the ensuing exchange, officers returned fire in self-defense, fatally wounding the three men. Two other accomplices managed to flee the scene, and a manhunt is now underway to arrest the suspects still at large.

At the scene, officers conducted a thorough search and recovered a cache of deadly weapons, including:
2 pump-action guns loaded with ammunition
    1 unbranded pistol
    25 live cartridges
    6 spent cartridges
The wounded suspects were rushed to Bekwai Municipal Hospital, but were pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies have since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

DCOP Nyaaba revealed that preliminary investigations suggest the three deceased were members of a notorious robbery syndicate implicated in a string of violent crimes across the Ashanti Region. The gang is believed to be behind:
The Jacobu Airport robbery on 3 November 2025 ,which claimed the life of a security officer
Multiple highway robbery incidents along the Manso stretch.

    The Antoakrom robbery
The Abofour forest robbery near Offinso
An earlier attack at Anwiankwanta on 8 December 2025
In a follow-up operation on 26 December 2025, police also raided a palm plantation near Manso Nkwanta believed to have been used by the suspects as a weapons stash. During that sweep, officers recovered:
    1 AK-47 assault rifle
    1 MG3 rifle
    1 pump-action gun
    1 single-barrel gun
Additional ammunition and personal items linked to the gang
DCOP Nyaaba assured the public that intensive efforts are ongoing to trace the origins of the seized weapons and to apprehend all accomplices still at large. He reaffirmed the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to safeguarding citizens and curbing violent crime in the Ashanti South Region.

He also appealed to the public to keep providing timely and credible information to support police operations, stressing that community cooperation remains crucial to maintaining peace and security on Ghana’s roads.
