SUAME MAGAZINE SPARE PARTS DEALERS CRY FOUL OVER BROKEN PROMISES ON FLAT RATE DUTIES
The Suame Magazine Spare Parts Dealers Association in Kumasi has expressed deep concern over what they describe as unfulfilled promises regarding the implementation of flat rate duties at Ghana’s ports.
According to the association, despite the recent gains of the Ghana cedi against major international currencies, duties at the ports have not been reduced. They lament that duty charges remain pegged to forex bureau rates, which continue to inflate the cost of clearing goods, contrary to expectations of lower duties.
Speaking to the media, Chairman of the Suame Magazine Spare Parts Dealers Association, Mr. Godfred Adu Kofi, highlighted the impact on popular vehicles such as the Toyota Voxy. He explained that the cost of clearing the vehicle has sharply increased — from GHS 35,000–GHS 40,000 in the past, to between GHS 50,000 and GHS 60,000 currently. This, he claims, is partly due to a reclassification of the vehicle from a “van” to a “wagon,” resulting in higher duties.
The association is therefore making a passionate appeal to the President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, to honor his promise of implementing a flat rate duty system at the ports — a policy they believe will offer much-needed relief to dealers and promote fairer trade.
